Types of Ear Wax: Genetic Variations Across Populations

Dry Type (Gray/Flaky)

Predominant in East Asian Populations(80-95%)

  • Linked to ABCC11 gene
  • Crumbly texture, less odor
  • Often forms in visible flakes

Wet Type (Amber/Honey)

  • Common in European and African populations
  • Stickier consistency, darker color
  • Higher lipid content
  • Often associated with stronger odor

Interestingly, the same genetic variants that determine ear wax type also influence body odor and breast cancer risk.
